People call it a "warning". It was also Tkachuk forcing a trade to put himself in the best economic position he could. The timing with his contract just happened to work out so that the Flames could get value for him. If Tkachuk's contract was expiring the same year as Gaudreau's he would have pulled the same move.

I have no info to back this up but i don't think Johnny leaving had anything to do with Tkachuk leaving. He was going to leave regardless. If Johnny re-signed I think Tkachuk still goes.
