I don't see Tkachuk giving the team warning, unless he knew Gaudreau was already gone. Tkachuk knew that without Gaudreau on the team, there was a good chance his own numbers would fall and he would get far less money in his next contract negotiation.
People call it a "warning". It was also Tkachuk forcing a trade to put himself in the best economic position he could. The timing with his contract just happened to work out so that the Flames could get value for him. If Tkachuk's contract was expiring the same year as Gaudreau's he would have pulled the same move.
