Yeah, but if they want to play in the WHL, which is often the only chance for talented young players to advance their careers, they are forced to play for the team that holds their rights. In what other industry is a sixteen year old in grade ten forced to relocate from Brandon, Manitoba, to Portland, Oregon, which is in a different country and about 2500 kms away, just to play hockey?
This is why I love seeing the WHL crumble. Players like this now have the choice to stay in high school and then get paid a proper wage to play for a US college team instead. Money talks and BS walks, and if Canada is too cheap to pay, these kids have another option now.
