The Sharks should have traded that pick for a haul, or at least a player/players (cough Anderson cough) that filled in the gaps that allowed them to move forward, rather than continueing to languish at the bottom. Instead they wanted another shiny new toy, which was the wrong move imo.

Well the Penguins won the Cup after taking Malkin, Crosby, and Staal with top 2 picks in 3 consecutive drafts. So this did happen before and with some success. I don't think Smith and Celebrini are Crosby and Malkin caliber of players. But in the early years one of them will likely be okay moving to wing if it means they can be a 80 plus point producer with Celebrini and the team isn't losing 50 games a season.
But at some point the Sharks either need some guys picked after the first 15 picks to contribute and in time will need to make a deal or two for some veterans if they want to start winning 40 games a year as opposed to losing 60.
Based on the rumblings out of Anaheim, it does give off the impression that under Cronin and Verbeek, that it was not an enjoyable work environment for the young players. So I tend to believe that had more to do with some of the player dissatisfaction. I suspect the Ducks will get McTavish signed, and if they start winning a few more games this year the players will be a bit happier.
