Backlund has had two things going for him:
1. He's been absolutely elite defensively and great at all the play-driving metrics, even when it doesn't show up in goals and assists.
2. He's played his whole career on a team that has been chronically short of centres. Even when the Flames had numbers at the position, they didn't have the quality to kick him down to the third line.
It's quite unlikely that Danielson will ever be as good defensively as Backlund, just because Backlund in his prime really was elite at that part of the game.
