I think it needs to be this summer. IMO way too much is put into asset management from the perspective of what you get, not managing what assets you already have. Also too much put stock put into asset management over the over all plan.
Ras departure will be someone else's gain.
If the plan is 100% not to re-sign Ras, trade him now and give someone else that crack.
Can anyone really say offer A will end up being better than offer B? If the offer is close, now is the time and nobody can guarantee anything. The Flames once traded Joe Nieuwendyk and demanded Todd Harvey in the deal only to settle on Jarome Iginla. Is every 2nd round pick we select better than every 3rd round pick we make? Lottery protection from a top end team really a big deal?
If the offers are close, play hardball for now but I really think he should be gone Sept 1 if the plan is 100% to move on. The development of a current prospect and the distraction gone is just as valuable in managing assets than getting an extra 2nd vs a 3rd.
