The only really viable criticism of McDavid himself, leaving aside annoyances with the way other people talk about him or how he's covered, etc, and just focusing on his own characteristics, is that he is sometimes over the top in his attempt to get the refs to make calls that benefit him and his team.
As far as criticisms of hockey players go for things they do while playing hockey, that particular complaint is basically the least objectionable thing you can object to. Lots of top tier players have had the same allegation made against them, not without cause. It's not like he plays dangerously or takes cheap shots or anything of that sort.
