But if the Canadiens continue to improve, those picks become late round picks and the value of them drops significantly. We just saw this in the last draft where the late 1st round picks were deemed to have very little value and trading up was "impossible".
Maybe it is worth it for the 2026 draft because of how deep it is rumoured to be but I think targeting Hage makes more sense.
A conditional pick would also be interesting. Get Hage and a 2026 2nd that becomes a 1st if they get to the second round.
If we have to take salary back, fine, but I wouldn't consider it a value-add for the Flames. I don't really think that Dach or Newhook move the needle for the Flames and bringing them back somewhat defeats the purpose of moving out a forward to make room for our players coming up the ranks. I would probably just try to flip them out immediately to a team that could use them.
