I find it curious that people call Cherry a patriot while simultaneously despising MacLean. If there's anything that Ron comes as close to loving as himself, it's Canada.
The work he's done on programs like Hockey Day in Canada and Hometown Hockey demonstrate his passion for this country. The one thing I appreciate about him is how he digs into the little stories and history in the nooks and crannies across Canada. Sure, he's a poet in his own mind only, and he generally comes off as a self-important wiener, but he's just as much a patriot as Don Cherry.
So maybe it isn't the patriotism or nationalistic values you admire so much, but rather the way Don thinks and speaks to which you relate. It's less the love for Canada, and more the jingoism and xenophobia.
Kind of like how the people that rallied around him telling immigrants to wear a poppy in November are the same ones clutching pearls over pride jerseys and pissing and moaning every June.
Maybe just stop tying to make your s###ty beliefs palatable because it all still tastes like s###.
