don’t think the Wings have been tanking at all. They’ve actively tried to improve through trades and UFA signings. Bringing in guys like Kane, DeBrincat, Tarasenko, Compher, Copp, Gustafsson, Chiarot, Talbot, and more.
If anything, they’re a cautionary tale of what happens when you try to keep competing. That said, the jury’s still out. We’ll see if Raymond, Kasper, Seider, and Edvinsson can take that next step.
They’re all promising young players, but so far they haven’t shown they can push the team over the top even with help from Larkin, DeBrincat, Kane, etc.
Honestly, it feels a lot like the path the Flames are on. Build through the draft, but no full tank and keep vets scattered through the lineup.
Or even like the last iteration of the Islanders (before this last trade deadline), a few strong young pieces like Sorokin, Barzal, and Dobson, plus solid vets scattered throughout the roster, but ultimately not enough to contend.
In today’s NHL, it takes elite talent at multiple positions and real depth to be a serious contender. Just having “some good players” doesn’t cut it, every team has some.
