That's not ideal from a Flames perspective in terms of max value, though it likely opens up the number of teams again somewhat so maybe not all bad news.
But really it's what I'd want to do if I were in his shoes, get traded to a team and see if it's a good fit before committing 7-8 years there.
Fans aren't going to like it, but it's the most reasonable decision IMO and also a right he's earned.
