I simply don't buy that Byram is a core player in the making at this point. And I certainly wouldn't be parting with assets that reflect that kind of expectation. Buying low and hoping he turns into that kind of guy? Sure. But beyond the draft pedigree, I don't see any evidence that Byram is a franchise pillar type of guy.
Nothing in his results with the Sabres last season suggests he's anything more than a middle-pair guy in the same vein as Brandon Montour or Kevin Shattenkirk — at best.
Flames should hold onto their assets instead of pursuing this.
