Sabres also know that the Flames will not actually send the offersheet since they won’t send their own first, they also know the Flames don’t actually want to pay Byram that much.
So what it will end up being is the Flames and Sabres coming together on a package that has the value of the offer sheet compensation (1st, 2nd 3rd) but doesn’t include the downside of an unprotected first. Since Buffalo value players and the Flames value futures there could be some way to get this done.
Then Flames would sign Byram long term around 6 or 7 ish.
