I haven't done a deep dive, but it seems to me that teams overpay for players at the deadline all the time, but players with term tend to get moved for other players with term.

I'd be curious to see if anyone has done an analysis into when teams get the best return on trades.
  • Mid-season (incl. deadline) in the final year of player's contract before UFA.
  • Mid-season (incl. deadline) when the player has at least one more season on his contract (or is a pending RFA).
  • Off-season prior to the player's final year of his contract before UFA.
  • Off-season when the player has more than one season left on his contract.

Also, how much of a premium do teams pay to acquire a player who is willing to sign a long-term extension after the trade?
I think there's certain players who are better deadline pickups than offseason. Good role players who may be too expensive for the whole year. For example, Coleman is a good deadline pickup - he adds a defensive boost and can shore up a weaker middle six. Backlund would be like that too. And there are guys you'd want for the whole season - I would have thought Rasmus.

I think if it's more than a one year the chances are you are trading up (Vegas trades guys with more time, but to get better players), or if there's trouble in the room. Markstrom was an anomoly and there were big reasons behind it - Wolf in particular.
