Secondly, yes, he's a free agent in a year....that's not now. Currently he's under contract and needs to abide by his terms. Of which, he does NOT have license to pick and choose where he lands.
The problem is that Conroy was trying to do right by the player, because he's a player's GM. He asked him where he would sign instead of just trading him wherever. Andersson has taken advantage of the situation to turn his 6 team NTC into a 30 team NTC, and that's not fair play, even if it's not technically wrong.

It's not about a nice guy, Conroy is trying to maximize the return for the player.
The best return is likely from a team that he is willing to sign an extension with, but that's only if Conroy can play multiple teams off of each other. If Andersson says he will only consider signing an extension with Vegas, then they get an edge in negotiation. They would still have to beat what any other team would give up to acquire him as a pure rental, but it won't need to be as good as if they were bidding against other teams he would sign with.
It's like the Stone trade. Ottawa wanted a huge return from the Flames and Treliving wouldn't do it unless he was able to talk to Stone and get an assurance that he'd be willing to sign a long-term deal. When Ottawa wouldn't allow that, Treliving backed out. In the end, Vegas didn't pay anywhere close to what Ottawa was asking for from the Flames.
