I haven't done a deep dive, but it seems to me that teams overpay for players at the deadline all the time, but players with term tend to get moved for other players with term.
I'd be curious to see if anyone has done an analysis into when teams get the best return on trades.
- Mid-season (incl. deadline) in the final year of player's contract before UFA.
- Mid-season (incl. deadline) when the player has at least one more season on his contract (or is a pending RFA).
- Off-season prior to the player's final year of his contract before UFA.
- Off-season when the player has more than one season left on his contract.

It’s the contract that made this more attractive. Teams want cost certainty and not having to negotiate a deal. 2 years at 2.25M on your 2nd pairing doesn’t come up often.
