That's what I've been thinking. So many people seem convinced they should have moved him last year for a huge return, but how often does that sort of thing happen?
I haven't done a deep dive, but it seems to me that teams overpay for players at the deadline all the time, but players with term tend to get moved for other players with term.
I'd be curious to see if anyone has done an analysis into when teams get the best return on trades.
- Mid-season (incl. deadline) in the final year of player's contract before UFA.
- Mid-season (incl. deadline) when the player has at least one more season on his contract (or is a pending RFA).
- Off-season prior to the player's final year of his contract before UFA.
- Off-season when the player has more than one season left on his contract.
Also, how much of a premium do teams pay to acquire a player who is willing to sign a long-term extension after the trade?
