While I don’t fault Andersson for excersing his rights, if a rift has developed he needs to own that. At the end of the 2023-24 season he was non/committal and verbally indifferent and the team accommodated him. If he’s upset with what the team has offered, that’s his problem. He has to look out for himself, but the Flames have to look out for the entire organization and fan base. The team has treated him fairly and doesn’t owe him anything other than what they consider to be a market contract.
Years ago I once heard a core Phillies player (baseball) say he was offended by an offer made by the team given his many years of service. I get the sentiment, but that’s not how it works. The smart teams pay players for what they project them to be, not what they were or esoterically mean to an organization. He’s a good player, seems like a good guy, but if he’s walking back on his words or simply not giving any consideration to what his current employer is saying he may be in for a long year, and disappointing summer next year.
