The model in the NHL these days is for contenders to push all their chips in. It’s why all of the top contenders this season (besides Carolina) have traded away at least three of their 1st-round picks in a 4-year span. Banners fly forever, etc.

From what I've heard in some podcasts or youtube (can't remember exactly), Carolina (accurately) didn't really consider itself a serious contender.
I hope being level-headed like that pays off for them. I'm kind of frustrated by teams throwing away their chips in longshot attempts that only leads to them having no path to improvement besides a rebuild... which leads to the most exciting new players always wasting their first years propping up otherwise bad teams.
