I don’t think it’s blackmail.
But imagine discussing a sign and trade with a team and they turn around and call the player and say hey why don’t you just sign for free with us in a week. Then you essentially got a free negotiating window with the player.
For the leafs it comes down to the fact that they thought they might be able to extract assets and now Vegas has sidestepped the process and is essentially guilty of tampering.
They would want Vegas to have carried out the trade that they said they were gonna do in the first place.
If of course any of it turns out to be true.
I’m actually surprised this has never happened before although these types of sign trade situations aren’t that common. I’m assuming in most situations the player doesn’t get to talk directly to the receiving team for this exact reason and a lot of it is done through the team that currently holds their rights.
