According to Freidman, Andersson turned down multiple teams who asked about extending him. Since Andersson presumably submitted his no-trade-list before the process started, these were teams that weren't on the list.
It sounds like Andersson does not want to extend, period. He wants to play out the season and try to increase his value in the market. It's a gamble for the Flames, because if Andersson doesn't rebound after a so-so 2024-25, or he gets injured, his value goes down. And now he's a rental, which narrows the market further.
Basically, a player who won't extend is worth less than one who will.
