Dobson was a 25 year old RFA that teams were able to sign for 8 years and get the prime of his career.
Andersson is great but he's turning 29 and is a pending UFA.
Maybe if they moved him last draft with 50% retention they would have gotten something close to the Dobson return but they waited too long.
IMO now the longer they wait the more risk is that the returns just get worse.

Hard to say if the Flames are asking too much or just didn’t want another late first in this draft. The only team that I thought had a shot with a higher pick this draft was Columbus but that was mainly based on Monahan etc. I can’t see any reason Andersson would want to sign in Buffalo and the other top 15 teams didn’t really make sense for an Andersson trade if he wants to go to a real contender.
So if they are going to get a mid late 1st and a prospect back then taking a swing next year makes sense. Might get less than if they traded him at the deadline last year we will just have to see how it turns out. The Markstrom trade turns out great in the summer.
