Thanks so much for posting this! I know it broke a few brains and like 4 pages of garbage posting from people who can't get there but, man, what an amazing rumour.

This makes sense because Conroy hangs up the phone for pretty much everything else the Stars are offering. We are hunting for a C, not a winger, and not spare parts. We have the best RD on the market and the Stars in particular are unable to go after Ekblad or Dobson because of cap constraints.

If the Stars offer anything less than Johnston then the Flames hang up and go back to talking to CBJ (Sillinger + 14OA), the Mammoth, Bruins, Red Wings, etc. Basically all of those teams beat out the Stars offer until they get to Johnston. Nill says "Johnston" to Conroy and now the Stars are in the conversation.

Now it would come down to value.
  • Johnston is great, but I don't think he is as good as Misa (#20A pick) and he isn't an Eichel either.
  • The Flames have the leverage as we have a number of suitors and the Stars have no cap space to add a #1RD. I don't think the package needs to be as extreme as what it would take to get to Misa.
  • The Flames have cap space to eat some of the Stars other problems (Dumba and Lyubushkin) which would further reduce the need to add much on the Flames side beyond Andersson with retention.

I am going to have to think on this to see what is balanced enough to agree to without forgetting that we have one of the best assets on the Trade Board, who is also one of the best assets on next year's UFA board, and that a bidding war is taking place which nukes all comparables.

This trade starts to look like when the Flames traded away that Hull guy to win the cup.

Super exciting Diss. Thanks again!
