I think one of the main concepts behind marijuana being a gateway drug is the fact that you have to go to a drug dealer to get it, and the dealer him/herself is the actual 'gateway' to other drugs... since there's a lot better chance of you being offered something harder from a drug dealer than, say, a cigarette/alcohol salesperson over the counter. I think the idea is that marijuana, due to its illegality, forces interested consumers to get in touch with people who may be selling a lot more than marijuana.
When you buy booze and cigarette's the kid across the counter doesn't say 'I've got some even harder, better stuff in the back... wanna try it?'... he just rings you up and sends you on your way.
Though I pretty much agree with you, I wouldn't be surprised to see regular drinkers/smokers as having a higher chance to get involved in other drugs as well (given that they're all drugs, just some are legal for some reason...).
