Short term I can see them paying him high $$ because we have the space, but long term he likely doesn't fit their projected budget allocations above a certain number. Any player in his position should want max $$ and max term, which doesn't make sense for the Flames long term if we have young guys like Wolf or Parekh that are going to get paid. Last thing I want to do is tie up space on a 36yr old Andersson with potential superstars looking for raises in 7 years.
So trade the asset now while you can and fill the spot with someone whose AAV number fits the long term plan.

I suspect that it is also tying up roster spots. They would be okay with Andersson here but it probably has to be a good price and term. So, they are not upset if he ends up being a 2nd or 3rd pair in a few years.
