Seems to me that this is actually the sticking point (Conroy's long term plan). If they are millions apart in AAV I would assume it's because of the contract term.
Short term I can see them paying him high $$ because we have the space, but long term he likely doesn't fit their projected budget allocations above a certain number. Any player in his position should want max $$ and max term, which doesn't make sense for the Flames long term if we have young guys like Wolf or Parekh that are going to get paid. Last thing I want to do is tie up space on a 36yr old Andersson with potential superstars looking for raises in 7 years.
So trade the asset now while you can and fill the spot with someone whose AAV number fits the long term plan.
