Average age only matters if your team is not competing at the highest level.
Last year Florida was 5th oldest (29.32), and Edmonton was 1st( 30.13).
Dallas Carolina were 12th and 11th ( over 28.8).
Only 4 teams in the bottom half of the NHL even made the playoffs, and non of those teams made it into the second round.
Being an older team is fine if you're a top team. The only reason being younger is better, is that it gives you a chance to grow for the future. the Flames circumstance now it is good to get younger, but that should not always be the goal.
