I would quietly love to go that route. But when you have a 23 year old stud goalie and multiple vet NMC's blocking trades, what else can you really do but retool on the fly.

I could easily accept a true rebuild through the draft which requires top 3-5 picks, but it's just not going to happen. That's why I don't get when people don't want to see Conroy make trades for players that help now. The team finished with 96 points while having the 26th offense. For better or worse, I don't think management is going to dismantle that, but will try to build off of it.
The way I see it, the choice is to be in the mushy middle just outside of the playoffs or be in the mushy middle on the side of making the playoffs with the chance of doing better than that. I'd rather be drafting every year in the 16-21 range than the 11-15 range. Neither way is a great recipe for building a true contender, but at least one provides more entertainment value and chance to win.
