Tkachuk was actually the first(in the cap era?), and maybe the only actual sign and trade. Most of them are traded, but the team trading for the player is allowed to negotiate with the player beforehand, so the player is signed immediately after the trade.
As a side note, I thought the Flyers trading Jeff Carter to the Kings was done in bad faith. They've done it after signing him to a contract with a no trade, but traded him before the new contract kicked in. That's a scenario the GM should probably avoid.
