Longer par 4 or 5 is trouble for me also. I pull out the driver and i'm in the thick rough to the right of the fairway most times. Now I use the hybrid and in most cases end up with a par as opposed to a bogie if I persisted with the driver.

Reading that is almost creepy man!! It is virtually identical to me!
I even match you with the friend part; i had my good golfing friend using my hybrid (who is an advanced golfer and has a very high-end all-Callaway set-up) and being an awe of the forgiveness in accuracy.
