Bahl-Weegar (big minutes)

I do not think the Flames need to add someone like Samuelsson to block one of our young players from making the roster. If Buffalo was offering us Byram then I'd change my tune as he would be a core player going forward but Samuelsson is not that level of player.

Kuznetsov in particular needs a long look at the NHL before we lose him. He is now an unsigned RFA with a potential exit strategy to the KHL. Considering he was a 2nd round pick that we have now put 5 years of development into, never seeing him graduate to the Flames would really make me wonder why we bother collecting draft picks outside of the 1st round.
If you can get an uograde at D at low to minimal cost, you have to do it. If it blocks a current prospect, so be it. Gives kuznetsov more time to ripen. If he bolts for khl, so be it. Second round picks are statistically less likely to make the show. Not every pick will make it, and given the trades we’ve made and draftees since we too kuznetsov, he’s likely further down the depth chart.

If a player in the age range that we are looking for becomes available and is an upgrade on what we have , you have to pull the trigger. If it upsets a prospect and they bolt, oh well. Draft another prospect.
