Here's the roster as it stands today if McDavid extends for 2026/2027 season, with Bouchard extended. Ages at start of the season in brackets.

Hyman (34) - McDavid (29) - ???
Nugent-Hopkins (33) - Draisatl (30) - ???
Janmark (33) - Frederic (28) - ???

Nurse (31) - Bouchard (26)

They have no prospects. They have 1 pick in the first 5 rounds this draft (St Louis 3rd). They have a 2nd, a 3rd, and a 5th next draft. At least they have their 6th and 7th round picks each year! They have no trade capital other than expiring contracts on useless players.

They will have to build out the entire geriatric team with UFA's. A proven path to success /s

The beginning of the end is here and McDavid either rides this elevator to the basement or jumps off next season.
This has to be one of the biggest issues McDavid likely considers. The team has very, very likely peaked and there is no prospect base or picks to replenish the team even in the next 4 years (allowing at least 2 years for picks in 2027 to develop - assuming they don’t trade them). He could alternatively go to a team that can be competitive for years and has not peaked yet. A smart move would be to go for a team that’s both competitive and has young talent/picks.
