Andersson has the fire that championship teams are looking for. I can understand that the Flames can’t really use the playoff type of player right now since they don’t (and shouldn’t) care about making the playoffs, but for the ####ty return (late first, roster filler, bad prospect, calling it now) that Craig will likely get for him I think extending would be more of a priority for me.

It is a good point. However, the situation is a bit different. Bennett and Tkachuk were mishandled in the organization and it happened while the team was relatively good. Had the team given Bennett a real chance to shine or had they signed Tkachuk to a monster contract right out of the gate instead of handing him a bridge contract then things would be very different for the Flames right now.
As it is now, the team is somewhere between a bubble team and a bottom feeder. Keeping Andersson would be good for mentoring up the young players but it likely keeps him from ever getting to chase for a cup (and he seems like the kind of guy who really wants to win a championship more than going for a big pay day).
If the Flames and Andersson are nowhere close on the dollar figures for his next contract then it makes sense to move him now so he can chase his championship and the Flames can focus on the retool/rebuild.
