There's always been boosterism...
Edmonton v. Calgary v. Saskatoon v. Regina v. Winnipeg...
Over time, the Alberta duo obliterated their competition, and now as Calgary is pulling away from Edmonton in many regards, they are acting like this self-absorption is something new.
The reason why a lot of rural Alberta are more Edmonton friendly is simple. Edmonton is like a huge small town with lots of blue collar workers and secondary industry. (I am aware they have an eclectic and cosmopolitan scene too, as well as the bigger and more funded/recognized university, but this is largely overlooked). Calgary on the other hand, are the shifty white collar folk, with massive skyscrapers and much more noticable big city issues... much harder to relate to.
