If they are willing to retain 50% on him then their is no reason the return at the Draft shouldn't be better than what they'd be able to get at the deadline.
And you'd avoid the risk of injury or anything else that could lower his value.

Edmonton is going to bend over to appease McDavid. Dallas is managed well and probably will make deals for long term health. Seems like a bit of a wash but Edmonton has a higher chance of falling off because of the back end.
