After Ron "not if but when" MacLean proclaimed them to be the next dynasty 10 years ago, things have gone about as well as Flames fans could have hoped for.
No GM would want to be known as the one who traded away McDavid, but they could get a haul trading him to a team in a competitive market with lots of prospects and cap space. Not sure who fits that bill but but it could be like the Lindros trade if the Oilers did it right.

I don't think it will happen but you are right that neither of the two options above really set the team up well for the future.
