It's in no way McDavid's fault.
Whenever a team lacks depth, the stars get blamed for not being able to perform.
You had Barkov, Reinhart, Forsling being hard matched against McDavid because they knew they didn't have to worry about the other lines.
That is two Selke finalists, and one of the best defensive d-men in the NHL. Tough to find space against those guys.

With McDavid - 52.0% xGF
Without McDavid - 42.0% xGF
The big thing is they also got PDO'd with McDavid on the ice at 5v5 - 3 GF 8 GA on .873 PDO (.830 save percentage).
But I hope the Oilers media fixates on McDavid being outscored 8-3 at 5v5, blame it on him, and run him out of town.
