Probably not just luck. If you're a young millionaire looking to live a high life, not a lot of better places for it than New York. All the entertainment you could possibly want, while enjoying a relatively low public profile.
I would imagine it's just harder to keep players focused on personal development and team cohesion there, and I would imagine all big US metropolies to some extent attract the kinds of players who would rather have hockey just be their day job.
