Not too sure what ‘going for it’ means in this context but I’ll bet SJ will want to improve. Does that get them out of the lottery all together, I doubt it, but out of the basement? I wouldn’t be surprised if they look to take that step.
I think that is a fallacy that teams openly want to tank. Especially in the offseason. Perhaps some do mid-season or at the trade deadline if their season is already cooked and they have expiring contracts to move or extenuating circumstances (trade requests etc).
I doubt, very much, Mike Grier is saying to ownership or his management team that ‘we need just one more year of being really bad so we can have a small percentage chance at drafting Gavin McKenna’. Very few, if any, NHL operate that way.
The rest of your post, I agree with. There is no assortment of picks/players/prospects the Flames can put together to get 2OA from SJ without Parekh being included and there probably is a + from the flames coming with it.
