Look at Florida trading Huberdeau and pissing him off. Do you really think their fan base cares right now? No, because they didn't think they could win with him and made the decision to move him.
Now every player wants to join Florida because they are winning. Nobody cares that they were mean to Huberdeau now. You do what you need to do, if you want to win long term.

Context around the particular situation is super important, though.
Huberdeau was a player they drafted and spent 10 years with them and in the last year of his deal, the team decided that he wasn't the player they felt they needed to build around, especially in the playoffs, and moved on.
Yes there were hurt feelings where Huby felt he was blindsided and yeah, you could argue it was a 'ruthless' move in an attempt to better the team (that absolutely worked out), but that situation is different than Kadri.
Kadri is a guy we actively recruited to be here, gave a NMC to, and has by all accounts done everything we've asked of him to live up to his contract (which IIRC many though was an overpay at the time) and more.
He's also someone who seriously wants to be here - to the point that they uprooted everything and moved family out here. And he's only been here 3 years and still has a no-move for one more season.
Forcing him to waive his NTC this year when it moves to a modified NTC next offseason just so you can maybe,
maybe have a better chance at getting McKenna is not just ruthless business, it's bad business.
The situations just aren't comparable.
