The thing about him looking for his sister and him changing course is sort of part and parcel with his journey from being narrowly self-interested to seeing that all of his own self-interested goals are tied up in what the Empire is. Basically an "it's bigger than just you" theme...
the stuff they were building in prison is shown being incorporated into the death star in the post credits scene in the last episode of s1.
