With that being said, that's also a lot of risk to take. Flames may end up a lot worse off than before. Huberdeau is a leader, and actually has a better track record of production with more PPG seasons and a high overall 'best season'. Plus, since arriving in Calgary and having things go terribly wrong, he has always faced the media with professionalism and has always held himself accountable. Apparently, he is also beloved in the room. While he is definitely overpaid, he has 6 years left @10.5 million. He has reinvented himself as a complete player and a power-forward as well, and good defensively.

Contrast that to Pettersson. Questions about his long-term health, been 'pouty' with the media, has potentially been a divisive presence in the room, and has a new contract kicking in next season that pays him 8 x 11.6. He is 6 years younger, and if he rebounds, the Flames will have a #1 center. If he doesn't, the Flames will have the worst contract in the entire league.

It isn't the 'easy win' that it appears. Still feels a lot like a gamble to me, but I think I would grudgingly roll the dice here just due to Pettersson's age and position. Plus with Backlund, I think it would help him to get off on the right foot here in Calgary. Definitely a huge risk, however, and it isn't like Pettersson has this long track record of production that warrants that deal.
I agree with your analysis. But it's there any indication that Vancouver would be interested in such a swap?
