Yes, Huberdeau's current value for his contract wasn't the worst this past year (it's still below average).
But it's not really about what Huberdeau's doing now; it's that in four years, when the Flames are in the middle of their competition window, you're likely still paying $10.5m a season to a 36/37 year old winger putting up 30-40 points or less. Huberdeau's deal made sense when it was signed, because the team expected to be in their competitive window during his 30-35 year seasons and retooling when his production tailed off in the last couple years. It didn't work that way.
I really doubt Calgary would rock the boat by trading for Pettersen with the rumours around him and the current team's culture that includes Huberdeau, but for longer term cap management, and the potential that they could rebuild Pettersen's value, they'd have to at least look into it.
