I stayed in a room in Rome where, n the bed, there were Cigarette ashes on the pillow and, I kid you not, a knife-gouge, with bloodstains, where the occupant's chest would have been.
They graciously agreed to change the bedding and assured me that whomever it was wouldn't be coming back. I stayed there a few days.
I once stayed in a Motel room that someone had been broken into and the door wouldnt lock. I came back from my day at one point and they'd taken the door off entirely for repair. Talk open 'open plan.'
One time I stayed at a place that didn't believe in having a door between the crapper and the bedroom.
I could write a coffee table book about crappy hotel rooms I've stayed in.
Literally, last weekend, I stayed at a Travelodge in Lethbridge and you know what? It had a bed, a TV, coffee maker, fridge, microwave, a little desk even and a clean bathroom. Nothing wrong with it at all. $90/night.
And there was a pub and a liquor store downstairs. What more do you want?? Walking distance to the Japanese Gardens.

I stayed in a hotel in Tena Ecuador near the Amazon. When I turned off the lights, I heard all this scurrying. I turned on the lights to see tons of cockroaches and insects scurry back under the bed. I sleep with the lights on after that.
