IMO you need to build a great top 6 and the bottom 6 will be built with different types of players. Most top teams have a veteran former top 6 forward who plays a different role then they did in their prime. Guy like Marchand. You need some good penalty killers in this group, you need guys that can forecheck, bring energy and hit everything in sight.
On defense, very similar. PK studs are needed, like a Tanev type.
You also need to assess the talent of young players vs the contract they are asking for. Teams that have too many $4 to $6 million players playing down the line up kill the cap. As your team improves, there is only so much ice time for everyone and nothing hurts more than a player falling out of the mix with a big contract.
No elite team has more than 5 elite players too. This whole idea of 3 superstar 1st liners, 1 superstar 2nd line center with 2 superstar D and goalie is something that never happens.
IMO Miller is worth a look if they contract is reasonable. He is big and fast. Paired with the right dman, I wouldn't expect him to become a 50+ point guy but having a bunch of big and fast dmen often results in a team tough to play against. With a rising cap and a NYR team that will want to make a splash to get better, Miller could be odd man out but still bring a lot to the table.
I really doubt Conroy is going to trade Rasmus and not add a dman. I think the cost to add Miller could be low. Could be our Niko Mikkola

You aren't wrong. Oilers have proven you dont really need defensive specialists. They just keep stacking speed and size. If you can teach a big pylon like Nurse to box out and transition the puck up then anyone can do it. Best defense is being able to get the puck out quick in transition so they have no zone time and having big bodies to stand in lanes.
