I think the difference is the Sharks have some building blocks now and if they have good management, can build a team who can contend in 4 or 5 years. Not a guarantee by any means, but lots of reasons for optimism.
The Flames meanwhile have a lot of aging assets. If Parekh ends up being elite it can change a lot. But having a great goalie really doesn't make you a contender. The most important position is center and we don't have any great ones. A lot of things would change if we tanked and got the #1 pick next year.
Right now the most likely Projection for the Flames if they don't believe in a rebuild is being a bubble team. Being somewhere between a Minnesota Wild team and best casw a Winnipeg Jets. Where they are fine teams but not really true contenders.
