The Oilers are not that.
Are they better or worse at drafting than the average? Worse
Are they better or worse at developing players? Worse

Are they better or worse at UFAs? Average at best.
The Oilers are good at 2 things:
1. Drafting Connor McDavid
2. Signing POS players that other organizations kicked out.
That's it.
The Oilers aren't a model of anything. They did 2 things right. They won a lottery and they drafted McDavid.
Because if you erase that they were doing ALL the other parts in terms of bottoming out and getting a bunch of high picks. At they STILL failed.
They aren't a model.
The Panthers, Lightning, Avs - those are models.
The Oilers aren't that.

Oilers success #3 (hate to say it)- Drafting draisaitl. Right now if I had to pick a player from the oilers I'd like knocked out of the series it wouldn't even be McDiver, it'd be Leon. Draisaitl is lights out this season. Teams just can't seem to contain him, whereas some teams have had more success slowing down McDiver.
