No one likes what this franchise has done in the last 2 decades, it's just a matter of if you think there is a different approach or not.
But the Oilers are not an example of anything resembling how to build a succesful hockey team, unless you think there is another McDavid on the horizon (there isn't).

Yeah. That's why I said there are two extremes. But you don't need to draft McDavid to win the Cup, as evidenced by the fact he's never done it before. But I think this organization has also been able to proceed largely unbothered by their lack of success because they haven't been challenged on it nearly as much as they should be. There's a model that seems to work and it's a lot closer to what Edmonton has done than what Calgary has, even though Edmonton undeniably fluked their way into it.
