It's interesting.
Gourde probably could have easily got like $4 x 3 - $12M total on the open market, but probably doesn't get much of a contract after that once he's 36.
So if he goes the traditional route it's:

And he gets $14-$15M over 6 years that way.
Or he does it this way and gets $14M over 6 years still, but helps the team add other pieces, keeps the cap hit lower, and gets to stay where he clearly wants to be longer term.
