Red Bull really pooched those calls at the end, though I can understand their thinking on each of them.

They probably thought there would be more than 6? racing laps at the end, but Max's softs were only 7 laps old. If you keep track position it'll probably still take a lap each for the McLarens to get past, in which time a little bit of field spread would open up, and maybe he'd be able to hang on without losing [m]any more positions.

Based on what happened further back, it could have worked out pretty well. Lawson stayed on old softs as the lead lapped driver.

Lap 61 restart:
P10 LAW 15 lap old softs
P11 OCON 16 lap old meds
P12 BORT 10 lap old softs

Everyone behind on fresh softs:
P13 ALO
P14 BEAR
P15 TSU
P16 SAI
P17 COLA

Lawson fully caught the crocodile so everyone was bunched at the restart. Only Alonso got by, so Lawson finished P11, Bort P12, and Ocon dropped to the back. Bearman also dropped to the back on the last lap, so maybe there was some chicanery and it was just a DRS train. Max's tires would have been 11 laps old at the restart, so you'd think he could defend as well as Bort.

And the other possibility they missed out on was a second safety car/red flag out of the restart...there might have been even fewer racing laps to worry about.
